CONCERNS over the tipping of asbestos at Edzell's skip site were raised at Monday night's meeting of Inveresk Community Council.
Edzell representative Iain Rae said: "I don't know how regularly the site is being emptied, but it has become a real mess in the last wee while and is really in need of tidying up. It's not only the fact that the skip is full to overflowing, it has b
ecome so full that rubbish is falling off it and that makes the adjacent areas untidy too."

However, Brechin Community Council chairman, Douglas Murray was able to through some light on one possible cause of the problem at the site.

"There has been recently an instance where a large amount of asbestos has been dumped on the skip. This is despite the fact that the dropping of such materials is clearly prohibited and clearly sign posted at the site.

"Throughout the whole of Angus, there are only two dealers who are able to remove asbestos and I believe Angus Council has had to have it removed to a landfill site in Perthshire, as there is no where to store asbestos throughout the county."

Members of the public in attendance also raised concerns over the general mess at the site.

Angus Council leader, Bob Myles, urged the local media in attendance to highlight the problem and bring it to the attention of any perpetrator, who might have been unaware of the ban on such materials on the site in the first place.

Inveresk Community Council are to continue to monitor the situation and are hopeful of improvements on the site which is run by a sub committee of the Edzell Village Improvement Society and retains charitable status.
